The Senior Director of Scientific Services provides technical, financial, personnel and overall program management for the institution's dynamic suite of core facilities that serve its internal research staff based in Farmington CT, and Bar Harbor, ME.  The individual in this role may be located at The Jackson Laboratory’s Bar Harbor, ME Campus or Farmington, CT Campus.


The Senior Director will ensure the provision of state-of-the-art service platforms and acquisition and development of new technologies while ensuring effective oversight, growth and development of operational staff.  They will build strong relationships and collaborations with JAX faculty and ensure current and future service offerings meet faculty needs to support achievement of their research goals and the overall success of the organization.  The individual in this role will have extensive knowledge of biomedical research, business operations management and cost evaluation.  They will be responsible for benchmarking studies to maintain the program's quality standards and improve operational efficiencies.  Their efforts will include developing business plans and operating policies to assure operational standards are met and comply with applicable federal or other regulatory guidelines.


The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience across a broad array of biomedical research technologies and extensive hands-on experience and deep technical knowledge in one or more of the following key service areas:  Genome Technologies, Single Cell Biology, Flow Cytometry, Computational Sciences, Phenotyping, Mass Spectrometry & Protein Chemistry, Monoclonal Antibodies, Genetic Engineering Technology, Cellular Engineering, Microbial Genomics, and Patient-Derived Xenografts.


Key responsibilities:

  • Service Planning, Development & Implementation - Strategic planning and program development to benefit internal faculty and staff research programs. Includes budgeting, business development, space planning and design; life cycle management, costing, funding and revenue.
  • Services Operations Oversight and Development -  Develop program capital and operating budgets including federal funding; Ensure effective cost analyses and pricing;  Ensure customer satisfaction including effective communications and development of strong, highly collaborative  customer relationships; Ensure Service operations are in compliance with federal/local regulations including documentation; Attends professional meetings germane to JAX research programs.
  • People Management - Oversee a team of 140 or more staff including 14 or more direct reports that manage the individual services teams; Ensure direct and indirect personnel development and performance management; Manage customer relations through direct interactions and indirectly through Service Managers with Faculty and other research users.
  • Projects & Proposals - Identify instrumentation and program needs; Oversee service tracking and billing systems; Some grant writing including NIH and NSF Shared Instrumentation Grants. Participate in cross-campus administrative communications and projects as needed
